Gary Sense on CSI New York

I like watching CSI New York, I have a question, Gary always seem to put across that he was an Officer in the usmc and one day I was reading an article in the local news paper that Gary has never been in the Military. Why is he trying to put across that he was in the Marines, I don't think it's right to say that you was a Marine and not being one. I was a Marine in Vietnam Do you find this valuable?

It's SINISE, and probably it's the character he portrays, and was in the military as Mac Taylor. NOT Gary the real life guy~ Do you find this valuable?
