Because David Philips has the same first name and he was around longer, so they just call Hodges by his last name; that's what I think anyway

Also Hodges is an "antagonist" and from what i have read the antagonist is usually called by his last name. (except in the case of Grissom where he is a PROtangonist rather than an antagonist) This is the way it is in novels from what i read - so most likely it goes for tv shows when there's an antagonistic figure on the show. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. i will always love hodges! hes the comic relief in the show. and whats wrong with only being called by ur last name? im only ever called by my last name and im a girl

I think he kind of likes being "Hodges" rather than David as being called bu your second name gives you a kind of cop feel
