Okay, perhaps there are some father-son aspects to their relationship but Greg is a grown boy now. It is true Greg respects and admires Gil, even seeks his approval (which is, ironically, something Gil disapproves of) and still tries too hard to impress Gil.

I remember early on in the show Gil reminded Nick to take Greg out to dinner because Greg did so good on a case. To me, Gil is trying to remove the sexual threat Greg poses by pushing him onto Nick. Greg still smiles sweetly at Gil though, trying hard to impress him even though Gil doesn't want Greg to try to hard. Secretly, I think he gets a slight thrill from it but he knows it would be healthier for Greg to not need to try so hard.

Then there was the fire in the lab, and Gil looks almost scared, follows Greg to the ambulance but then he spots Sara. It's easier to comfort Sara than deal with Greg and his own emotions. After that Greg was desperate to get out into the field and Gil had no choice but to give in. Even after Gil had to tell Greg that he failed his first proficiency test, Greg looked like a kick puppy and Gil couldn't stand to see that so he gave Greg another chance.

After Fannysmackin' it was Gil who we saw visit Greg in hospital, gently teasing.

Soon after, the Sara/Gil relationship was developed in canon. It always seemed a little forced to me, Sara has enough problem of her own and I don't think a cryptic person like Gil Grissom would help her. Gil said his type was 'someone who doesn't judge' and to be that just screams Greg, not Sara.

Greg doesn't need protecting but I think he does bring out those protective feelings in Grissom. Greg is young and strong and beautiful and I think he could help support Grissom as well as Grissom helping Greg to be trust his own judgement, learn to love himself.

For me, Sara and Lady Heather are just substitutes for Gil's feelings towards Greg
